preschool prattle III

while driving alone in the car with W

W: OOOH! Watch out!

thinking we're about to get hit, looking all around car to realize we are basically alone on the road

Me: What are you talking about?

W: You need to be careful.

Me: OK, I'll try.

W: Oh my goo'ness!!! You almost hit dat guy!

again scanning the perimeter of the car...

Me: What?!

W: GASP! You almost crashed into dat tree!

Me: Um, son, we're on the road. The trees are way over there.

W: Yeah, well, you bettuh watch out!

****************************************************

While sitting in a chair yesterday, talking about something I now cannot recall, W slapped me. On the face. HARD.

I think I experienced a momentary "lapse" during which his life flashed before my very eyes. During the next .08 seconds, W found himself across my knee, then nose-to-nose with his stunned, half-crazed mother looking him directly in his now big-as-saucer eyeballs.

Me: HAVE YOU LOST YOUR MIND?!

W: ...

Me: Don't you EVER hit me again.

W: ...

Me: You hurt Mommy. You DO.NOT.HIT.

W: Uh, I meant to, um, hit the...uh, the um ball...and I didn't um, mean to, uh, um, hit you, Mommy.

Me: ...

W: It was um, uh, a ax-dent. I sah-wee Mama. I didn't mean to.

I let him live.

But he bettuh watch out.

thankful thursday

A son asked his father, "Dad, will you do a marathon with me?"

The father, despite having a heart condition, says, "Yes."

They went on to complete the marathon together. The father and son went on to join other marathons, the father always saying 'Yes' to his son's request of going through the race together.

One day, the son asked his father, "Dad, let's join the Ironman together." To which, his father also said, "Yes."

For those who don't know, Ironman is the toughest triathlon ever. Held every fall in the US city of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, the race encompasses three endurance events; a 2.4 mile (3.8 km) ocean swim in Kailua-Kona Bay, a 112 mile (180 km) bike ride across the Hawaiian lava desert to Hawi and back, and a marathon (26.2 mile, 42 km) along the coast of the Big Island (from Keauhou to Keahole Point to Kailua-Kona); finishing on Ali'i Drive.

Father and son went on to complete the race together.

"dear john"

Dear PC,

We've been together for years now, and I know you have tried hard, in your own way, to be there for me. At least as much as you could. There's no easy way to say this, but our relationship is just not very fulfilling anymore. I've got to move on. Please try to understand. It's not you. It's me.

No, wait, it IS you. You had to know this was coming. For years, you have refused to change. Oh, you got yourself a shiny new outside, but on the inside you're still just a cave man. I need more.

I'm sure it came as quite a shock to you when I brought home someone new. And shoved you into the cabinet. But really, three's a crowd. Nevertheless, I'm sorry. That I didn't do it sooner.

We're over. Life is too short, and I refuse to settle. I need color in my life, to be challenged. Frankly, your boring blue screen was becoming a real eye-sore.

Please try to understand.

Sincerely,

BV

Dear Mac,

Mac: Vrooom! Vrooom!

Me: Purrrrrrrrr...

Sorry about what's-his-name. I'm glad you're here! I am so excited to begin our life together. I love how you sit proudly atop my desk, not hiding behind the little door. But after all, you've got nothing to be ashamed of! You're so handsome and sleek and...shiny! I still get a little tingle and butterflies in my stomach every time I come into your room. I know you're looking at me with that cute little built-in camera. It's ok. I see you too.

*blush*

I can't wait to get to know each other better! Your colors call to me. I know before long we'll be speaking the same language, and we'll make beautiful projects together.

Oh "Mackie" iLove you!

Yours forever and always,

"Boopsie"

randomness and rambling

This week has been frittered away on the phone with insurance adjusters, rental car employees, service technicians at car dealerships, satellite tv representatives, and the occasional unlucky telemarketer whose call I accidentally answered thinking it was someone I actually wanted to talk to.

Yeah.

That's how it is after a weather "incident." You make lots of calls, and then you wait. You either wait for them to call you back or you wait for them to show up. But either way, you wait.

It seems everyone wanted to come yesterday. The insurance adjuster on the "home" side of the policy came to evaluate the damage to our "dwelling" and "contents" and our tree. The satellite-tv guy came to repair and/or replace fried equipment and basically ingratiate himself to the kids who were thrilled by his visit! And while not weather-related, a plumber came to check out the pipe in the laundry room. Though in some weird, completely twisted way, it was a little sad to say goodbye to the "redneck laundry." For about two seconds. I think "Philip the Plumber" is my new BFF.

Turns out the ginormous tree needs to come down, or at the very least have the damaged limbs removed. The adjuster suggested that we actually have it taken down because of the severity of the damage done to it by the lightning strike. I certainly don't want a ginormous DEAD tree hanging over my house. Anyone care to venture a guess why? Mmmhmm, that's what I thought.

Since we have a huge deductible, the tree ate most of it leaving us very little for the repairs that need to be made. It's ok though because Jay is more than capable of doing the repairs himself except maybe the electrical stuff, which quite frankly, I'd rather have someone else repair. You know, in case the strike really mucked up the wiring, and touching it could, you know, kill you or something.

The other major (potential) loss is our vehicles, though I am naively hoping it turns out to be nothing. The dealerships first have to order and install new computers before they can run diagnostic tests on both of them to see what damage was actually done. I guess my fear is that they are worth WAY more to us than if they have to be totalled. Especially the truck because it's paid off. Oh well, there's nothing I can do about it. We are currently driving two rental cars which the kids think is like some kind of weird vehicle vacation. Although, W and I had this conversation this morning:

W: I don't wike silver cars.

Me: You don't?

W: Nope.

Me: Why not?

W: They're too bumpy.

Actually, it's not the car. It's because the rain has "washed out" part of our road. That's just another perk of living in the "holla." Because it is not a "through" road, the city doesn't maintain it. Whatever.

I know this post has been random and disjointed, but so has my week.

Jay: You know you're the common denominator in all these storms we've been through.

Me: Whuh?

Jay: Yeah. You just attract natural disasters.

Me: I attracted you, didn't I?
